Historical Coins and the design for the VIII Ibero-American Series. The sculptor Vitor Santos was responsible for designing the "Escudo" coin.
The artist has reduced a journey through time and memory to the face of the coin.On the obverse are various circles, representing the history of the Escudo through its life-cycle.On the left-hand side there is a circular shape showing the "allegory of the republic", an Escudo 50 cent coin from 1913.The next circle in the history shows a ship, a 2$50 coin from 1944, and the last circle shows an escudo coin created by the sculptor Herder Batista in 1981.On the reverse of the coin is shown the Portuguese coat of arms, surrounded by the coats of arms of the other participating countries.
The Ibero-American series are an initiative by Portugal, Spain and several Latin American countries.Through minting collector coins for these series, the participating countries celebrate themes that demonstrate their common history and culture.
